The de Havilland Dragon Rapide (designated DH.89) is a twin-engined passenger biplane. Originally designed in 1933 by the de Havilland company, the "Rapide" first entered commercial service in 1934 on the Hillman Airlines London to Paris service and was soon adopted by small and large companies alike as a short-haul passenger airliner.
Sir Geoffrey de Havilland had a keen interest in lepidoptry and this clearly influenced his aircraft designs. Both the name and the physical styling of the Dragon Rapide evokes the elegance of the dragon fly and, like its predecessor the Dragon (DH.84), the Rapide retains the distinctive and moth-like de Havilland fins and rudder. The aircraft was constructed using the standard methods of the time: wooden box sections with fabric and plywood coverings. Powered by a pair of de Havilland's revolutionary Gypsy Six engines producing a total of 400 horse power, the aircraft was originally specified as capable of speeds up to 157 mph with a ceiling of 16,700 feet.
These were a very popular and reliable aircraft in the pre-war years and became a work horse for the Royal Air Force during World War II as a trainer, light transport and a radio communications aircraft. Military versions of the aircraft were known as the de Havillan Dominie however the differences between military and civilian versions was largely a matter of interior fittings and passenger comfort. A total of 731 were built up until 1942 when the factory at Hatfield switched over to production of the de Havilland Mosquito (DH.98) the famous "wooden wonder" of World War II.
Like it's stable mate the de Havilland Tiger Moth, many ex-military aircraft were converted back for civilian use after the war and the marque proved a very durable example of British engineering with 12 examples still registered today (January 2011) with the Civil Aviation Authority including 3 in private ownership, 3 owned by heritage and museum trusts, and 6 owned by commercial companies.
