Virgin Experience Days Argos Red Letter Days Play Activity Superstore Thruxton London Theatre DirectOr, more accurately, the Lord Chamberlain's Globe as Shakespeare was but an actor and playright working for a troop of players under the Lord Chamberlain's patronage.
The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 and survived until 1644 when it was closed after a puritan law was passed banning all stage plays in the theatres (which often also served as gambling houses and brothels). The modern reproduction is within a stone's throw of the original site and is as faithful a reproduction as possible. In fact the original site was located and excavated during the early stages in order to provide more information on the construction techniques and layout. Where possible, changes have been limited to health and safety requirements and the addition of basic amenities such as lighting and toilets.
As a site of some historical importance, the Globe is as much about history as performance so tours of this theatre can be arranged, often in conjunction with afternoon tea or a cruise on the River Thames by which it stands.
