The de Havilland Tiger Moth (DH.82) is a single-engined biplane designed and used primarily as an initial flight trainer, a role in which it excelled due to its combination of forgiving flying and slow stall speed, its capacity to perform challenging aerobatics and its stable flying characteristics allowing close formation flying.
Developed from the Gypsy Moth (DH.60), it first took to the skies in 1931 and was soon adopted by the Royal Air Force as its primary training aircraft. Other variants during World War II included modified aircraft that could be used as light bombers, as tugs for aerial target drones, and as vehicles for the delivery of poison gas attacks. Following the war, excess Tiger Moths were disposed of and the aircraft found commercial service towing advertising banners, as an aerial ambulance and for crop dusting, as well as being a popular choice for both private individuals and flying clubs as a recreational aircraft. A number of Tiger Moths were also retained by the services and the marque remained in service with the RAF into the 1950s and with the Royal Navy until the 1970s.
By the time production ended over 7,000 Tiger Moths had been built including over 4,000 for the RAF, many of which were constructed by the Morris Motor Company at Cowley near Oxford, also famous for it's MG series of cars. In fact some "MG" enthusiasts have likened flying a Tiger Moth to driving a vintage MG but with wings!
Like de Havilland's Dragon Rapide passender airliner, this outstanding example of British engineering proved a highly durable and long-lasting machine with 176 individual aircraft still registered with the Civil Aviation Authority today (January 2011).
As well as this Tiger Moth page there are also pages on Dragon Rapide.

There's lots of help around, just click on something that looks like it might be useful if you are not sure what to do.
If the column header contains a pull-down list, you can use this to control which products are shown in the table.
Click on the arrow and then select the option from the list that you want to filter by.
To sort a column (e.g. to sort by price) click on the raised button containing the column title.
Click again to reverse the sorting order.
You can use the map at the top of the screen to filter by distance from a certain location. Just hover your mouse over the map and a box will pop-up allowing you to enter a postcode, town name etc.
Once you have entered this information, a new Distance column will be added to the table showing the number of miles from this 'from' location to the nearest venue where you can do each experience.
You can then use this Distance column to sort or filter the entries in the table.
Products are automatically added to this list when you click on them. They are then shown with a yellow background in the main table, so you know where you've been.
The list is stored on your PC in a 'cookie' (temporary storage) and expires after 2 days, but you can clear it using the 'clear all' button.
You can use the 'Send' button to get a copy of this list including product descriptions (like the example to the right) sent to your e-mail address. Please note that we do NOT keep a copy of your list OR a copy of your e-mail address.
